You know it's going to be a good year when this is your first session!
I met the Extended Emeott and Brondyke family in Midland Michigan at the Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens. I highly recommend checking out this unique location if you're in Michigan! There are so many beautiful trails through the woods with endless photo backdrops, of course. Jim and Nan Emeott have three adult children, Chris, Matt and Megan who have all married and started their own families. In this day and age, it's common for families to be spread out across the country and the Emeott's were no exception. Thankfully, they had all come together to celebrate the holidays and took this opportunity to capture updated family photos with all three generations. We created these images and so many more!
If you've been following along with my photography journey, you'll know family photography is my jam. I think it's so important to document your family story through photos because like memories and stories, they are part of our legacy. We hold them close and pass them down to the next generation. The gift of sharing visual moments, details, people, and places we love are priceless. Family photos can manifest emotions that words just cannot describe. Plus family photos are a great excuse to get everyone together.

The best part of extended family sessions is capturing all the different family/generational combinations. I usually start photographing the entire group then move into smaller groups and pairing plus any special requests my family has. I loved capturing these images of just Jim and Nan with their children.
Now that the kids have had a little break to play, snack or just relax it's time for individual portraits and photos with Grandma and Grandpa! Capturing individual portraits of each child during family sessions (extended or smaller) is the best. You really get to see their individual personalities. Children grow and change fast which is why I believe it's important to freeze little moments like these as often as we can.
Why not add on an individual family mini-session?! You're already there and dressed in your best. A few minutes with each family focusing on their connection all while having fun.
Every single family session I encourage couples to get a few photos of just them. Two people falling in love is the entire beginning of your family story. I meet tons of couples that have not had their photo professionally taken since their wedding more often than not it's been years since that wedding. Your love and relationship evolve with you over the years. It should be documented and celebrated often!
Thanks so much for reading! HUGE thanks to the Emeott and Brondyke families! It was an honor to help you celebrate your family this year.
