What to Wear to Your Engagement Session

Congratulations!! I assume you are here because you are engaged to be married… or maybe you just love my posts that much ;) . Your engagement session isn’t only an amazing experience, but it’s something important that has to be checked off your to-do list! You’ll more than likely use these portraits for wedding decor, save the dates, invitations, etc. That’s the main reason I always tell my couples to get them done as soon as possible! Besides, who doesn't want some memorable photos with their love?

When it comes to choosing an outfit for special occasions, you probably turn into a stress ball like most of us, or maybe you are just that type of person who knows exactly what to wear. If you are… I’m jealous. And if not, let me share a few of my favorite tips on choosing what to wear to your engagement session!

01. COMFORT

Oh, I beg you! Please dress comfortably. Comfort truly is key and you do not want to be messing with your outfit during photos and stressing out. More than likely, you’ll be running around with your partner and twirling around for those engagement photos so making sure you are comfortable is so important. Wear something you feel confident in and avoid fabrics that feel scratchy or too tight. I always tell my couples to wear something loose that has some kind of movement. For example, this stunning dress in the photo above is flowy, comfy, and beautiful!

02. COLOR

Alright, guys, let’s get real. I know sometimes we love neon colors and lots of eye-grabbing sparkles but I don’t recommend wearing that for your photos. Sometimes neon colors photograph weird and those crazy colors become a little too distracting. Trust me, I love fun colors too but it’s better to stay in a neutral, soft color realm. Great colors to consider while still being eye-grabbing are whites, blacks, tans, browns, soft blues, light pinks, and monotone greens! There are many more colors too but those are the best ones for photos typically!

03. DON’T MATCH, COORDINATE

You want to avoid completely matching outfits but still make it look like you’re going to the same place. When it comes to coordinating your outfits, be sure to coordinate both your color palette and your level of dress. If they are wearing a cocktail dress and heels, you should also dress to that level and avoid jeans and a graphic tee.

04. PINTEREST

Outfit inspiration can be hard to come by sometimes but my absolute favorite app to find outfit inspiration is Pinterest! Pinterest is amazing because you can type in things like “Engagement Photo Outfits” or “ Flowy Dress Outfits” and even the color of an outfit like “White Outfit Ideas”. Pinterest has thousands of ideas and you’ll be sure to find one you love!

05. WEATHER

Check the weather of your engagement photo location at least a week before your session and again the day or two before your session so you know what to expect. Planning your outfit accordingly to the weather might just save you and your photos. If you live in a cold climate and didn’t realize that it might be snowing on your session date and wore sandals… you are going to freeze. Be prepared for whatever the weather may throw at you.
